Cd-treated soybean (Glycine max) seedling shows significant inhibition in soybean root growth. The inhibition of root growth is correlated with the increase of peroxidase (POD) and laccase activity. The increase of cationic(pI 8.9) and anonic(pI 4.8ĦB4.4ĦB3.5) PODs and laccase(pI 9.4) is accompanied by a rise of lignin contents in Cd-treated tissues. We suggest that the increase in PODs and laccase activities induced by Cd might mainly be responsible for lignin synthesis in soybean roots during Cd treatment.
