CBF/DREF1 and DREF2 proteins are well known transcription activators which activate a set of genes containing C-repeat/dehydration-responsive elements in their promoter. It has been known that the CBF/DREB1 transcription activators function in cold stress responsive gene expression, while DREB2 family functions in drought and salt responsive gene expression. Here, we report the isolation of putative CBF/DREB1 genomic DNA fragment from oat which showed different abiotic stress response in mRNA expression level from that in other plants. In contrast to previously reported CBF/DREB1 genes, the putative oat CBF/DREB1 gene is induced by both, cold and drought stress, but with different pattern. Under the cold condition, the putative oat CBF/DREB1 gene is slowly induced after 2hrs. By drought treatment, however, it is rapidly induced within 30 minutes and then remained continuous increasing until 4hrs. This result indicates that the putative oat CBF/DREB1 transcription activator may function as a common regulator for both cold and drought stress responsive gene expression. 1M J Jeong and M S Kang contributed equally to this work
