Senescence is the final stage of the leaf development. The molecular mechanisms regulating the induction and progression of leaf senescence are complex and remain largely unclear. One line of research to understand this developmental stage is to collect and analyze the senescence associated genes (SAGs). We have employed cDNA microarray to examine global gene expression profile information in the process of dark-induced leaf senescence. By monitoring the gene expression patterns in a carefully chosen time series, we have identified hundreds of up- and down-regulated genes during dark-induced leaf senescence. Those genes are clustered and categorized according to their characteristic expression patterns and responsiveness to dark treatment. Molecular analyses of these genes, including the survey of common cis-regulating elements and the biological pathways represented by the genes identified, will be presented.
