The fresh weight of fruit increases ad. 100 times within 10 days after fertilization (DAP) compared to the unfertilized ovules in Charentais melons (Cucumis melo L cv Reticulatus). In this early fruit development stage, active cell division and elongation, and sugar metabolism among others are supposed to be accompanied. To clone genes involved in the initial stage of fruit development, we applied the suppression subtractive hybridization method. By subtracting the unfertilized ovule cDNA library from that of 10 DAP, seven cDNA clones from 40 subtracted were confirmed to be differentially expressed in 10 DAP fruit by reverse Northern analysis. Currently we are surveying expression patterns of those genes in fruit developmental processes and screening cDNA library to get the full-length cDNA clones
