Chimaphila maculata (L.) Pursh (Spotted Pipsissewa) is a small evergreen perennial member of the Ericaceae family. Although considered rare and endangered in some parts of North America it is common in southeastern United States. There are two varieties of Pipsissewa with Chimaphila umbellata being the most studied. Both varieties have been reported to have diuretic, tonic, and astringent properties. These medicinal plants have been used to treat urinary infections, nervous disorders, tumors, rheumatism, diabetes, skin eruptions, and sexually transmitted diseases. This study utilized the Agrobacterium tumefaciens induced potato tumor assay to evaluate antitumorgenic properties of Chimaphila maculata. We report a reduction in tumor formation using decoctions of leaves, stems, and rhizomes with leaf and rhizome decoctions producing the most reduction in tumor numbers. Other bioassays were performed and will be examined.
