Isoflavonoids are a group of phenylpropanoid compounds, many of which exhibit phytoestrogenic, antimicrobial and anticancer activity. They are distributed predominantly in leguminous plants. Lupin roots accumulate large amounts of isoflavonoid compounds and are regarded as an important system for studying isoflavonoid metabolism. To advance our understanding of isoflavonoid biosynthesis and discover novel biosynthetic pathway genes, we constructed a cDNA library from lupin roots and generated over 5,000 expressed sequence tags (ESTs). The EST sequences were deposited in ESTAP database (Mao et al., 2003) and BLAST searches (BLASTN, BLASTX, and TBLASTX) were performed, allowing us to annotate these sequences based on matches in the NCBI databases. Functional categorization and comparative analysis of the lupin root EST sequences will be presented.
