Brassica species, in which is phylogenetically related to Arabidopsis thaliana, is one of economically important crops and a model of plant polyploidization and rapid phenotypic evolution. Recently, we have established a Korea Brassica Genome Resource Bank (KBGRB) for maintaining and distributing genetic and genomic resources of B. rapa ssp. pekinensis to the international community to augment research on structural/functional genomics and to meet the objectives of the Multinational Brassica Genome Project (MBGP) (http://www.brassica.info). As KBGRB is a seed and DNA stock center, KBGRB has collected and maintained the Brassica germplasm and mapping populations, BAC libraries, cDNA libraries, and microsatellites and expressed sequence tags (ESTs)-derived markers for genomics of B. rapa. Of the present resources, the mapping populations and molecular markers developed have been used as important materials for constructing standard reference genetic map of B. rapa. With the mapping populations, the BAC libraries have been also used as important template for physical mapping and genome sequencing and for map-based cloning of genes interested in B. rapa. Further, the genetic stocks related to wild Brassica species, with genetic resources described above will play important role to isolate useful agronomical traits and undertake marker-assisted selection (MAS) for improving productivity, quality and environment sustainability. Important genetic resources available in the KBGRB will pave the way for solution of interested genetic phenomenon, discovery of novel genes associated with agronomical traits and their application to breeding. Other details and activities of KBGRB are accessible at the http://www.brassica-resource.org.
